Until the end of 2009, Hui Wa'a Kaukhi was registered with the American Canoe Assocition (ACA) as a Paddle America Club (PAC), a membership that had been continuous since about 1990. The entire point of this association was that ACA provided an affordable liability insurance policy for kayak clubs such as ourselves. It was and is, in fact, the only such provider in America. Although it started as a good thing, as the years progressed both the cost of, and the conditions attached to, the coverage increased precipitously. Finally someone on the Board sat down to actually read the wad of paper that we were automatically signing each year, and discovered that we were continuously - and perhaps contemptuously - in non-compliance with the policy conditions. Our coverage was akin to, as one Board member put it, "the emperor's new clothes." We were faced with the choice of either radically changing the way the Club organized and ran its weekly paddles, or dropping the coverage. Guess which one won out?
The up side of this is that the cost of membership in the Club just plummeted. It is now back to mid-90s prices, at least until our treasurer lowers the boom on us...

Such a deal. For this, you get a membership card good for a 10% discount on kayak stuff you buy at Go Bananas Kayaks, a quarterly electronic issue of the Lifeline newsletter (we're trying to phase out the paper version, but it is still available if you ask for it), and of course, membership in the oldest, biggest and most fun-loving kayak club in Hawaii!
We realize there are many people out there who feel uncomfortable even walking out their front doors in the morning without some kind of insurance umbrella in place. For those folks, we humbly suggest that you go directly to the source - American Canoe Association - and join as an individual member. (There is a printable brochure from the ACA here). In addition to getting under their insurance roof, you also get a subscription to their monthly Paddler magazine and some other cool stuff. Please keep in mind that their insurance is strictly for liability, so it's only in effect if you get sued by someone else for negligence. It is NOT accident or medical insurance.
If you had previously paid us for Club membership which included individual ACA membership, for a term that extends into 2010 sometime, then you are still a member, and will receive a renewal notice at the end of that term. Steve and Paul are working on it. Night and day. Hold your breath.
